Reduce the movement of liquid cargo in the tank and increase safety and productivity through efficient cargo hold layout

Korea Register of Shipping discussed the shape design of New concept liquefied gas cargo hold and fuel tank (Hi-ICON), developed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries at Nor-Shipping 2023 held in Oslo, Norway on the 8th . It was announced that AIP (Approval In Principle) was awarded.

The key technical element of liquefied gas tank design is to secure structural stability by reducing the sloshing * phenomenon in the tank caused by ship motion. This plays an important role in reducing the risk of accidents or disasters that may occur during transportation.

* A phenomenon in which cargo in liquid state moves like a wave in a tank due to shaking of a structure such as a ship, which gives a strong impact to the tank and causes damage.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries developed a new liquefied gas cargo hold and fuel tank by reflecting these core technological elements. Its major feature is that it greatly alleviates the sloshing phenomenon and secures stability by optimizing the shape of the liquefied gas cargo hold.

At the same time, by improving the arrangement of the cargo hold, the cargo hold is arranged more efficiently than before, increasing work efficiency and further improving productivity.

A KR official said, “The new tank shape developed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is packed with technologies that can increase stability and productivity through sloshing reduction and efficient cargo hold arrangement. ”We will actively cooperate with the shipbuilding industry , and furthermore, we will do our best to provide technical support for the development of next-generation eco-friendly ships.”

A HD Hyundai Heavy Industries official said, "HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will provide safe and reliable total solutions to domestic and foreign ship owners by expanding and applying Hi-ICON, which received this AIP, to various liquefied gas carriers and propulsion ships in the future. "Based on this, we will continue to strengthen our competitiveness in winning global orders in the future liquefied cargo carrier market, including LNG.”
